Actually Andy, the smaller credit unions may be the only ones left as they weren't stupid/greedy enough to give bad loans out through the years.

As for Wells Fargo, I was with them for a decade myself before switching to my local credit union. They got me with tons of fees and charges from bill pay, to minimum balances, to atm fees, to phone service fees, etc.

Since I switched, I now EARN 5% on my balance in checking with no minimum. Have all atm fees charged by other banks returned to me at the end of each month and none charged by my credit union. Get friendly and helpful customer support for free. Free bill pay, free online banking, etc.

There is no comparison between my local credit union and the big banks. Big banks are for profit and out to get your money. Credit Unions are non-profit and full of wonderful benefits. I will never use a big bank again.

ING direct is the only bank I want now. I never liked big banks, even in Canada.

Wow, bad experience indeed. With the way banks are falling over nowadays, the big ones may be the only ones left. Still, with less competition in the sector, the service is not going to improve anytime soon.

Great post.

You have to watch out for the traps that big banks might put you in because they try to outsmart you.

You know, that is funny you should mention that you had trouble with your ATM card. I too, was having trouble this past weekend. Everyother store it came up 'declined', but worked great when I used it as 'credit'. I also have money in my account and overdraft protection. hmmmm...

I don't make calls to WF. So, I haven't stumbled across that charge.

I still like WF. My husband started with them. But, I sitll have my Credit Union account and have a wonderful relationship with them. I am glad you found happiness with a credit union. And you're right, it is nice not to have to push a bunch of buttons to reach a live person. That is such a pester!

Happy Holidays!
