@Debtbeater, I like your yearly archive idea, that makes a lot of sense. Marking everything as new certainly works, it's just an extra step unfortunately and most email programs don't seem to give you a folder count unless the items are new. oh well, the process is what really matters anyway

This is very similar to a system I've been using for years. It's freakin' sweet. I think I may try moving to this setup though. I never knew about the show total number of messages in a folder before. I've always marked messages as unread if I need to get back to it later in the day. It's not true "empty" inbox fashion, but it's worked for awhile. Afterward everything gets dumped into a folder for what year it is. (I actually had one archive folder, but there is a limit to the number of emails that it'll hold so I started making "archive 2004" etc.)

Thanks for sharing the tip!

Cool, good luck with your email system. The problem I have now is that at home I use Office XP and that version of Outlook won't display the number of messages in a folder if they aren't new so I can't have my visual aids on the follow-up and hold folders. I need to figure out a way to do that or get a copy of 2003 for my home computer. I also tried Thunderbird by Mozilla and that has the same limitation as the older version of Outlook.

This is a fantastic hack for email! I've forwarded this one to the office so I can put it in place in the morning. I've got some sorry setup now that is unmanageable at best - I really like how you've described this three-folder system. Thanks for sharing!
