Weekly Weigh-in

I have great news this week! I weighed in at exactly 246 pounds on Monday morning, which puts me at 20 pounds lost since I started this weight loss project back in September 2007.

Current weight: 246 pounds

Weight lost since starting the blog: 20 pounds

Progress since starting with the new scale: -8 pounds, -0.6% body fat, -1 BMI

Looking back at the past 5 months, I did not lose weight as quickly as I wanted to, but I can’t complain about my progress either. I weigh 20 pounds less today because I took action back in September to change my life. I could have easily continued doing what I was doing and still weigh 266 pounds today, or likely much more than that.

20 pounds works out to an average loss (roughly) of 4 pounds per month or 1 pound per week. I suppose that counting the exact number of weeks would make that average a little bit lower, but it is good enough for me. :) At the beginning, my desire was to average about 1.5 pounds lost per week, so I didn’t do too badly after all.

By the way, I lost this weight without doing any crazy diets, spending money on expensive weight loss pills, joining a fancy gym, or spending any other money except for the scale that I bought. My primary form of exercise was walking mixed with jogging. In fact, I have hardly lifted weights at all because I seem to get injured just about every time I do- you know, I did recently turn 30. :)

My diet still has room for improvement, but I make smarter choices each day and try to focus on eating smaller portions. I try to replace high calorie junk foods with healthier alternatives when I can. For example, I am much more likely to eat some low fat yogurt and some fresh fruit now when I would have had something sweet like a danish or a scone in the past.

My goal is a complete overhaul of my diet and health routine so pursuing some crazy diet like no carbohydrates and lots of fat just doesn’t fit. That isn’t realistic for the long term and it isn’t healthy. If you want to lose weight I strongly encourage you to take a long term view, make small changes each day or week and don’t go chasing any fast weight loss schemes. Slow and steady wins the race.

Yikes, my posting has really slowed down over the last couple of weeks. I’m not giving up on the blog, I just haven’t felt very motivated to write lately. I’m not exactly sure why, I guess I’m just in a quiet phase of the long battle with weight and debt and nothing really noteworthy has come up lately. On the bright side, I have lots of post ideas and topics that I want to write about so I just need to sit down and get to work for a little while. That being said, I do have positive progress to report this week, so on to the good news…

Current weight: 247.2 pounds

Weight lost since starting the blog: 18.8 pounds

Progress since starting with the new scale: -6.8 pounds, -0.7% body fat, -0.9 BMI

I started last week with very little motivation and I was comfortable being lazy after finally getting over my cold. Finally I convinced myself to wake up early and exercise and I got back on track. I exercised 3 days last week, all of which came at the end of the week, but I feel re-energized and ready to keep it up again. I also did pretty well with my diet, only messing up on a few meals during the week, and overall I followed a mostly healthy meal plan. I am close to reaching the 20 pound mark so I’m going to push for that this week.

Seems like I’ve been away for a while, but don’t worry I’m still here. I thought I was over my cold last week, but it lingered for a while and I was terribly unproductive all week. I didn’t exercise once so I’m happy that my weight didn’t go up any more than it did. Shocking news, but exercise does matter! :)

Finally! It took about five weeks longer than it should have, but I finally broke through the 250 pound level. Amazingly, I weighed in this morning at 247.4 pounds. To be fair, I think that number deserves an asterisk (at least a small one) because I came down with a cold over the weekend and that likely decreased my weight somewhat artificially. That being said, I can take this new number as motivation and work extra hard this week to make sure I stay below 250 for good. I am also tantalizingly close to a total weight loss of 20 pounds so I want to try to push for that this week.

In addition to catching a cold, I also started moving toward my new exercise and diet plan over the past week. I didn’t exercise as much as I wanted to, but I did do a pretty good job with my diet. I am eating 5-6 small meals per day and I am making better choices- more details on my new plan coming soon.

This week also happens to be the last weigh-in of 2007. The New Year makes for a great time of reflection so I’ll take a moment to review where I’ve been with my weight. I actually started 2007 with the intention of losing weight before a close friend’s wedding in September. The first weigh-in I have recorded for the year was 262 pounds on January 8. Instead of losing weight for the wedding, I gained weight and that brought me to the start of this website, when I weighed in at 266 pounds in September. Yikes!

I am happy to report today that I weigh 251.6 pounds, 14.4 pounds less than when I started this website and 10.4 pounds less than when I started the year. I’m happy that I have a weight loss to report (rather than a gain), but I also have to look back at a lot of wasted time in 2007 that I could have used to work on my weight. Who knows how much better off I could be today. No sense in crying over the past though. I recognize that I wasted time and missed opportunities this year, but I will use that as motivation to do better in 2008.

Back in September I set a goal of weighing 250 pounds by December 1. As you can see, I missed that goal by at least one month now. I wish I could have done better, but I can’t complain about losing 14 pounds either. Again, I can look back at wasted time and opportunities and I must commit to working harder next year to reach my goals. 205 pounds by September 1 is not going to be easy. In fact, it hardly seems possible today given my recent history, but I am going to stick with it and see what I can do. I believe it is possible, but I know it won’t be easy.

Best of luck to everyone in the New Year with whatever goals you are trying to achieve. I am very busy battling both my debt and my weight, so look for a lot more content to come as I work my way through these problems. I will be documenting everything I do to find success (and talking about my failures) so be sure to follow along if you are fighting one or both of these same battles in 2008.
